▶ The powerful 22-liter hydrogen engine, HX22, generates a maximum of 816 horsepower.
▶ Showcases a range of hydrogen technologies for mobility and power generation.
The Engine Division of HD Construction Equipment will unveil its 22-liter large-capacity hydrogen engine at Korea's largest hydrogen industry exhibition. HD Construction Equipment is set to officially launch in January of next year, with the engine division playing a crucial role in the company's future growth.
On Wednesday, the 3rd, HD Construction Equipment announced its participation in the World Hydrogen Expo 2025 (WHE 2025), which will take place at KINTEX in Ilsan from the 4th to the 7th.
WHE 2025 is Korea's leading hydrogen industry event, attracting global hydrogen companies. This year, the event has expanded in scale by combining the Korea International Hydrogen Conference with the industrial exhibition H2 MEET. The exhibition will showcase hydrogen value chain technologies and solutions from 250 companies, including major domestic firms and participants from 20 countries, such as the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Approximately 30,000 visitors are expected to attend.
HD Construction Equipment will showcase its portfolio of hydrogen engine technology, which includes applications in both mobility and power generation, at this exhibition. The company will present the 11-liter HX12 hydrogen engine, designed for vehicles and power generation, and the 22-liter HX22 large hydrogen engine, specifically for power generation.
The 22-liter hydrogen engine is recognized as the world's largest. Featuring a V-type 12-cylinder configuration, it produces a maximum output of 600 kW (816 horsepower) and a continuous output of 477 kW (649 horsepower). This engine has the capability to meet the annual power needs of approximately 200 households. It is being developed to take a leading role in the carbon-free, eco-friendly power generation market, utilizing green hydrogen and hydrogen produced from ammonia as fuel.
The HX22 successfully completed its first startup ceremony at the Gunsan plant on November 12, marking its official entry into the demonstration phase for large carbon-free hydrogen engines.
Meanwhile, the 11-liter HX12 hydrogen engine has undergone rigorous testing to verify its performance and durability. This testing includes △ over 1,500 hours of operation during hydrogen engine generator demonstrations and △ installation tests on large cargo trucks and excavators. The HX12 aims for mass production by the end of 2026. The company is targeting the commercialization of hydrogen engine trucks by 2027, hydrogen engine generators by 2029, and hydrogen engine excavators by 2030.
Lim Hyung-taek, Head of the Engine Division at HD Construction Equipment, said, “This event showcases the advancements we've made in the development of our carbon-free hydrogen engines.” He further noted, “By leveraging our top-notch technological expertise, we aim to broaden the use of hydrogen engines across both the power generation and mobility sectors.”
Scheduled to launch in January next year, HD Construction Equipment will emerge from the merger of HD Hyundai Infracore and HD Hyundai Construction Equipment. The new company aims to enhance its technological capabilities in hydrogen engine-based solutions. These innovations will include △ carbon-free power generation solutions, △ hydrogen powertrains for large commercial vehicles and construction machinery, and △ direct-injection hydrogen engines to support the growth of the hydrogen industry ecosystem.
